“My mom was 22 when I was born. I’m 27 now. And I have no kids. Everybody has kids. But I don’t.

My husband is the reason why I have no kids. We didn’t talk about kids before we got married. He says, mothers are dumb. And that I will ruin my life if I get pregnant. I didn’t know I’d need to convince him. We talk about it every day. But I can’t change his mind.

But I want him to be a father. I surround him with kids pictures. I hang them everywhere. So that he starts liking them. I got old family albums from his parents. To show he was a kid too. Once.

I keep a diary. I record all discussions. I’ll put everything in a book. And I will give it to him. And it will convince him. I know it will”.

"In 2011 my husband got an offer to work for Google in Zürich, Switzerland. Neither me nor my husband spoke German or ever lived outside of Russia.

We rented an apartment on the top floor at Zwinglistrasse 17, twenty minutes walk from the Google office. I had a limited residence permit and couldn’t work for two years. So I stayed at home. We bought curtains, a table and some glasses. We met my husband’s new colleagues, Google employees, and their wives, Google wives."

For one year I took pictures with a remote control every time I met my new friends and members of my new community of Google wives.

When I later went through all my pictures I’ve discovered a story of a girl who relocated to a new place and new culture, to a new community, who was feeling alone, and who tried hard to adapt.

Since the appearance of computers we (humans) are obsessed with two things:

1. Creating explicit (erotic/pornographic) content.
2. Censoring such content. 

One of the first images scanned and rasterised by a computer was a photo of a dancer Deborah Hay in the nude. Since the 1960s humans are focused on filling the global computer “brain” with the images of nude women. 

However, modern Internet communication platforms are too big for humans to manually filter explicit content. Instead, an automation is used: computers and artificial intelligence algorithms are “trained” on enormous amounts of explicit images created by humans to do automatic moderation.

Effectively, humans have filled machines’ “brain” with images of nude women, and then trained machines on these images in order to censor humans themselves so that they don’t fill machines’ “brain” with such pictures anymore.

“Computer Nude” project focuses on the following questions:

How do automated moderation services see human body?
When and why do they think that a certain picture is obscene?
How subjective are they?
Does their behaviour depend on a personal taste of whoever trained them?
Can computers make mistakes when deciding if a picture is explicit or not?
What’s these algorithms’ “idea” of a human body? Of a female body?
What's the connection between the obsessions to create nude images and to censor them?
How will the world look like with automated moderation being used more and more?
